What Is the CAPM Certification?
The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) is PMI’s entry level credential for professionals who want to demonstrate foundational PM knowledge before accumulating the experience required for PMP. It validates that the holder understands the project management framework, processes, and terminology defined in the PMBOK Guide.
Unlike the PMP, CAPM requires no professional PM experience. A recent graduate who completes 23 hours of PM education is eligible to sit for the exam. This makes it one of the most accessible formal PM credentials available, and the only PMI certification a first year professional can realistically earn.
Who Should Pursue CAPM?
CAPM is best suited for three groups: recent graduates entering the job market who want a credential to differentiate themselves, professionals in adjacent roles (coordinator, analyst, admin) who want to signal a PM career transition, and people accumulating experience toward PMP eligibility who want a recognized credential in the meantime.
It is less valuable for experienced professionals who already qualify for PMP. At that stage, the time and money are better directed toward the PMP itself, which carries significantly higher salary premiums and broader employer recognition.
CAPM vs PMP: When to Choose Each
The two certifications serve different career stages and are not directly comparable. CAPM requires only a high school diploma and 23 hours of education. PMP requires 36 to 60 months of professional PM experience and 35 hours of PM education. A candidate who qualifies for PMP should not pursue CAPM first. The PMP supersedes it, and employers treat the two very differently in hiring decisions.
CAPM is a stepping stone, not a career endpoint. Most holders plan to earn PMP within 3 to 5 years. The 23-hour education requirement for CAPM counts toward the 35-hour requirement for PMP, so the preparation investment is not wasted.
How to Prepare for the CAPM Exam
The CAPM exam is knowledge based rather than situational. The primary study material is the PMBOK Guide, which PMI members can download free. Candidates should focus on process groups, knowledge areas, and the terminology PMI uses to describe PM activities. The exam covers predictive (waterfall), agile, and hybrid approaches.
Most candidates prepare over 4 to 8 weeks studying 5 to 10 hours per week. Structured options include PMI Authorized Training Partner courses, which also satisfy the 23-hour prerequisite; online courses on Udemy or Coursera; and the Google Project Management Certificate, which satisfies the 23-hour requirement at no cost through financial aid. Practice exams matter because PMI uses scenario style phrasing even on knowledge based questions.
Is CAPM Worth Pursuing?
For the target audience, yes. CAPM holders in the US earn between $50,000 and $90,000 depending on role and location. Entry level project coordinators typically earn $50,000 to $65,000, while junior project managers reach $70,000 to $90,000. The credential does not carry the salary premium of PMP, but it meaningfully improves hiring prospects and starting salary negotiations at the entry level.
The total investment ranges from $400 (exam fee plus free study materials) to $1,800 (exam fee plus structured training). PMI membership at $129 per year reduces the exam fee by $75 and provides the PMBOK Guide for free, making membership worthwhile for most candidates. The 23-hour education requirement doubles as exam preparation, so prerequisite and prep costs overlap significantly.

Common Questions About CAPM Certification
Is CAPM worth getting?
Yes, for early career professionals and career changers without PMP eligible experience. CAPM holders in the US earn $50,000 to $90,000 depending on role and location. It also satisfies part of the 35-hour education requirement for the future PMP application, so the prep work compounds into the next credential.
How does CAPM compare to PMP?
CAPM is entry level with no experience requirement. PMP requires 36 to 60 months of PM experience and commands significantly higher salaries. CAPM is a stepping stone, not a replacement. If you already qualify for PMP, skip CAPM and pursue PMP directly. The PMP supersedes CAPM once earned.
How long does it take to prepare for the CAPM?
Most candidates study for 4 to 8 weeks at 5 to 10 hours per week. The exam is knowledge based rather than situational, so mastering PMBOK process groups, knowledge areas, and PMI terminology is the primary focus. Practice exams are important because PMI uses scenario style phrasing throughout.
Does CAPM expire?
Yes. CAPM is valid for 3 years and renews by earning 15 Professional Development Units (PDUs) or retaking the exam. Many CAPM holders choose to pursue PMP instead of renewing, since PMP supersedes CAPM once earned and carries greater employer recognition.
What is the CAPM exam format?
The CAPM exam has 150 questions (135 scored, 15 unscored pilot questions) and a 3-hour time limit. Question types include multiple choice, multiple response, drag and drop, and scenario based questions. The exam is delivered at Pearson VUE test centers or online with remote proctoring.
