OpenAI shipped 18 consumer-facing updates between March 1 and April 30, 2026, including two new model tiers, a complete image generation overhaul, and the introduction of ads on free plans. The pace of iteration has accelerated significantly compared to 2025.
Model selection now appears in the composer on web so you can pick the right model before sending a message. Thinking effort controls also move into the model picker. Available on Plus, Pro, and Business plans.
New flagship model for professional work with stronger multi step reasoning, tool use, coding, research, document creation, and agentic workflows. GPT-5.5 Thinking and GPT-5.5 Pro also available for eligible paid plans.
New mode that responds faster to common information seeking questions with high confidence answers. Skips past chats and memory. Available globally on web, iOS, and Android. Can be turned off in Personalization settings.
Free version of ChatGPT for verified U.S. clinicians with clinical search, citations, reusable skills, deep medical research, documentation support, and CME credits. Appears as a separate workspace under the same login.
New image generation model available on all ChatGPT plans. Also introduces images with thinking, where the model plans and refines outputs before generating. Thinking images available on all paid plans.
Ads now appear for Free and Go plan users in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans remain ad free.
New fallback model replacing GPT-5 Instant Mini. Activates when users hit rate limits for GPT-5.3 Instant. More natural conversation, stronger writing, and better contextual awareness than its predecessor. Does not appear in the model picker.
The Outlook Email and Calendar apps now support delegated workflows: reading and managing shared mailboxes, sending from shared addresses, and creating or updating events on shared calendars. Requires appropriate Microsoft permissions.
Hands free ChatGPT voice conversations now available through Apple CarPlay. Requires iOS 26.4 or newer. Users can also resume existing mobile voice conversations.
New app actions including write capabilities for supported apps. Users with existing connections need to reconnect for the updated experience.
Plan based experiences like Images, Codex, Pulse, and Apps now appear in a horizontal bar above chats and projects on iOS and Android, clearing space in the sidebar.
The legacy deep research mode is removed. The current deep research experience remains unchanged and historical conversations and results stay accessible.
Pasting more than 5,000 characters into the composer now automatically converts the content to an attachment. Keeps the composer cleaner and prevents large pastes from consuming the context window. Available on Plus, Pro, and Business plans.
ChatGPT can now search products, compare prices, and surface shopping results. Available on web and mobile.
New lightweight reasoning model. Available to Free and Go users via the Thinking feature in the + menu. For paid users, serves as a rate limit fallback for GPT-5.4 Thinking.
Students can sign in at chatgpt.com/codex/students, verify through SheerID with their university email, and receive coding credits. Credits expire 12 months after the grant date.
GPT-5.1 Instant, GPT-5.1 Thinking, and GPT-5.1 Pro are no longer available. Existing conversations automatically continue on GPT-5.3 Instant, GPT-5.4 Thinking, or GPT-5.4 Pro respectively.
Update to GPT-5.3 Instant that improves follow up tone and reduces teaser style phrasing in responses. Eliminates patterns like 'If you want...', 'You'll never believe...', and similar clickbait style phrasings.
When asking about certain topics, ChatGPT can now present interactive visual modules that let you experiment with formulas and variables in real time.
New frontier model combining coding capabilities of GPT-5.3 Codex with improved tool use, spreadsheet creation, and agentic workflows. GPT-5.4 Thinking provides upfront plan visibility so users can adjust course mid response. GPT-5.4 Pro also available for deeper reasoning tasks.
Build, update, and analyze spreadsheets directly inside Excel. Limited beta in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Enterprise and Edu workspaces default to off with admin enablement required.
The preset Nerdy base style has been removed to simplify options and improve response quality. Users who selected it are moved to the default personality.
GPT-5 base models are no longer available in ChatGPT. All users default to GPT-5.3 Instant or newer. GPT-5 had been the default since its August 2025 launch.
Extended thinking level for GPT-5.2 Thinking restored to its prior setting after an inadvertent reduction in January. The thinking level toggle now correctly reflects three distinct levels.
Responses to everyday questions now include at-a-glance visuals. Important people, places, products, and ideas are highlighted inline. Tapping a highlight opens a side panel with key facts and trusted sources.
Standard and Light thinking time lowered for reasoning models based on user preference for faster responses. Extended thinking setting for GPT-5.2 was unintentionally reduced and later corrected on February 4.
